New to Java

I might not be asking the correct question - but is there a way to convert a running java applet to an applet that will run on a cell phone?

I thought that I tried the basic steps that are described in the toolkit manuals but it didn't work. I am probably doing something wrong - or expecting something that can't be done.

Is there a way to do this? Does the original applet need to be made specially, and if so what needs to be done.

I appreciate any help that is provided.
