Connecting to DB in mount state

hello all.

I'm trying to rename the members of redo log files. to do so, i've shut down the database, renamed the members via OS command, start up the database in mount state and now, trying to connect through SQL*plus or iSQL*Plus, but it says "ERROR - ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress". what do i do wrong?
