Java Security

I've searched the Internet and still can find an example forgenerating keypair and saved in certificate format. Since the most example or the keytool can only generate one certificate, can someone help me on this?

Also, should the public key and private key generated be in either .cer, .crt, .der, .p12, .pem format?
