Configuring iSCSI LUN errors (stmfadm): data file error

883274Oct 1 2014 — edited Jan 15 2015

We did a clean install of Oracle Solaris 11 (i86pc) on our x4540 THOR/thumper in order to facilitate an iSCSI target, for emergency use.   The zpool was created with no errors.  Following these directions:

Configuring iSCSI Devices With COMSTAR - Oracle Solaris Administration: Devices and File Systems

I get to the point of:

# stmfadm create-lu /dev/zvol/ddsk/sanpool/LUN1

stmfadm: data file error

Which is a completely ambiguous error.   Searching Google, I see no meaningful information about it.

My first hunch was that because the underlying disks were formerly a raidz pool, this may be the cause.  However, that being the case I would expect the zpool creation to either nullify that information for fail outright.

Anyone know what the problem could be?  I have a support ticket in with Oracle Support; however, someone else may run into this error and would benefit from more useful information, too.
