combo box overlapping frame problem

this may well be a standard problem so i thought i'd best ask..

I can only seem to pull down the contents of a combo box when it's overlapping the edge of the UI frame. An example is here:

If the combo box is situated furthur away from the edge of the frame, it refuses to show it's contents when clicked. Again, i've made a screenshot here:

if anyone is familiar with this i'd really appreciate some help.
