coalesce vs shrink space compact

694352Apr 11 2009 — edited Apr 12 2009
Hi

As far as I know "coalesce" clause combines all contiguous free extents into larger contiguous extents.
and it is only valid in dictionary managed tablespaces.
In oracle 10g, there is "shrink space compact"which is used for local managed tablespaces

Does the "coalesce" in oracle prior to 10g perfoms the same duty as "shrink space compact" ?
I dont get their diffrence.
