Clearing the cache in OBIEE

Hi,

I am new to obiee and have few basic questions.
We have an option "cache persistence time " in rpd. I just curious to know where those cache entries will be stored and how this persistence time setting works internally?
Is this similar to the nQS* logs found in /var/tmp?

And what will be the impact of clearing the cache in /var/tmp without stopping(bringing down) the server properly?
