Cleaning up duplicate JREs

843798Sep 29 2007 — edited Sep 30 2007
In my ActiveX folder (i.e. C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files) I have:
--three copies of JRE 1.5.0
--four copies of JRE 1.6.0 (of these, one is 1.6.0_01 and three are 1.6.0_02)
--(and two copies of Office Update Installation Engine)

Why are there duplicates and more importantly, how may I safely remove the duplicates?
This is apparently a special folder of some sort, because a right-click shows only Update, Remove, and Properties on the context menu. I assume I could choose the Remove option but I would like to know what ramifications there may be when I do that. And as to which to delete, I assume I do not need any except the latest 1.6.0_02 so I could delete all the rest? Does it matter which of the 1.6.0_02 ones I delete? Sorry for the rather trivial questions, but I am rather paranoid about deleting things when I am not familiar with the consequences.
