Choosing the retention policy and Differential Backup type for a 1 TeraByte DB

C. BoutetAug 14 2017 — edited Aug 14 2017

DB version: 11.2.0.4

Platform: Oracle Linux 6.8

I have a DB which is 1 TB in size. Due to purging activities ( DELETE + SHRINK + Datafile resize), the DB size is expected to stay between 1 to 1.5 TB in the future.

Currently, the full ( L0 ) RMAN DB backup takes around 1 hour. I haven't tested a restore yet.

If the DB goes down, the business wants the DB to be up in an Hours time during business hours 9AM-9PM .

Currently archivelog backups are taken at 11 AM and 4 PM.

In such a scenario,

A. What retention policy would you choose ( Redundancy  or Recovery Window )  ? Frequency ?

B. What differential backup type would you choose ( Differential or Cumulative ) ?
