checksum offloading

I found in a Sun document that there is the possibility to do TCP checksum offloading.
How to activate this and tell an Ethernet driver to off load the checksum?
Is there also UDP checksum offloading?

Is there any messages to tell the link is up or down (assuming a DLPI Ethernet driver)?
