Checkbox - Checked = 1 and unchecked = 0

How do I do this?
Say I have a checkbox that just want to use for "check" or "uncheck". If it is "checked" then it returns a 1 and if it is "unchecked" then it returns a 0. I know this must be really easy but i can't figure out yet. please advice
