Changing Spfile & Control File and backup location

SQL_DeveloperMar 26 2009 — edited Mar 26 2009
Hi All,

I currently caretake an Oracle instance, the way its been setup, the spfile & control file backups have been setup to store backups on different folders, I was wondering if this is normal practice or whether I could combine them all together.

Spfile & control file stored here

/u01/oracle/admin/SELFCARE/arch/Emis/autobackup/2009_03_26/

Daily differential and Archive log backups are stored here

/u01/oracle/admin/SELFCARE/arch/Emis/backupset/2009_03_26

I want to know if it would be wise to keep them all in thesame location, also would there be any risks/advantages/disadvantages of doing this.

Lastly, coming from a SQL server background, I can tell between a differential, full, transaction log backup so during a disaster I can know which one to use etc, does oracle have similar functionality, I am looking at the backup file names and they seem to be very random names, If we lost the server completely, there is no backup report information for me to go back to look at.

What will I do here.

Thanks.
