Changing a value in a field (after selecting from LOV of another field)

Dear all:

I have a very simple question to ask, please. I have 2 fields on a form. Field 1 has an LOV attached to it. Once a selection is made from this LOV, I want to change the value of a Field 2 immediately.

WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM trigger fires only when I leave Field 1 (not immediatly after a selection is made), and POST-CHANGE trigger is No longer recommended for the usage. Could you plaese, advise me how I could achive what I want?
