To verify whether or not your Dyn Remote Access service is working properly you first need to be at the host location that you want to use a hostname to access remotely. If you're using the service to access a device like a web camera then you need to be connected to the same Internet connection that the cam is connected (if it's not a cam the same goes for whatever other device or computer you want to access).
From your host location follow the steps below:
1. Log into your account at https://account.dyn.com/entrance/ 2. Click 'DynDNS Pro' listed under the 'My Services' column. 3. Note the IP address under 'DETAILS' of the hostname you're connecting to.
4. Open a separate web browser window or tab. 5. Type http://checkip.dyndns.com/ into the browser's address bar and press enter.
This should display the current public (WAN) IP address of your network in blue numbers. If the IP address displayed matches the IP address that your hostname is currently pointing to in your Dyn Services account then your Dyn Remote Access service is working correctly and the issue is likely in your router/local network configuration (see below if IPs don't match).
The Dyn Remote Access service is a Dynamic DNS service (DDNS).What our service does is associate your hostname with the dynamic IP address assigned to your router by your Internet service provider (ISP). A dynamic IP address is an IP address that is changed at random and without notice. When you configure your hostname into an update client, what that update client does is check your current IP address every few minutes and if your ISP has changed the IP address it contacts our servers and updates your hostname with the new IP address.
This ensures that whenever you type your hostname into a web browser or software application and press enter it will always go to your host network. Configuring connections to certain devices is all done inside your network and actually doesn't really involve DNS and isn't within our service's sphere of influence.
In most cases the issue is usually that port forwarding has not been configured in the router or has been configured incorrectly. You need to make sure that the port(s) specified by the device manufacturer are open in the router and are being forwarded to the current local IP address of the device you're trying to access. The local (LAN) IP address should begin with either 192.168 or 10.0. Please contact the router manufacturer for assistance on port forwarding or visit portforward.com, as we cannot provide support for third party products. You can check to see if you've successfully opened a port on your network by testing at: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
Once you have all the steps accomplished, you will type "host:port" in your browser to reach a device remotely on your network. An example ishttp://john.dyndns.org:81.
IF THE IP ADDRESSES DO NOT MATCH: You need to install an update client on your host network in order for the service to work. An update client notifies us when your IP address changes. Once your domain or hostname is configured in an update client the IP address will automatically be updated in our servers whenever your Internet service provider changes it. Domains or hostnames should only be configured to update in a single update client that has been installed on the host network that you want the domain or hostname to point to.
We recommend you install the officially supported Dyn updater software on a host computer running on your network and have that update your hostname(s). This would require that you have a computer running on your network 24/7. You can download and find information about installing the Dyn Updater here: http://dyn.com/support/clients/
You could also configure the built in update client in your router or other device. Since routers and remote devices are third party products we can't guarantee that they'll update your hostname correctly. In the event that your third party update client isn't updating correctly or you need assistance configuring it, you'll need to contact the manufacturer or the Internet service provider that issued it to you for support.
