Can you modify the substitution string of a page/list template value in Apex 5.0 (Theme 42)?

I am trying to modify the side global navigation bar template, but I am going in circles which landed me at the substitution string change. I tried to find the list template being used, but after copying several templates and replacing the old template to the new copy of the template there was still no change. So I found the substitution string which creates the side global navigation bar which is:

SubstitutionReferencedFromDescription
#SIDE_GLOBAL_NAVIGATION_LIST#YesBodyNavigation Menu (Side)

Sorry for formatting.

I could not find the description anywhere in the list templates I have, or it is pointing to an old version of the template but does not reference the template name. (All the list templates have 0 references which is weird, so I guess the side navigation bar is not using a template.) So I guess two questions: Is it possible to change the substitution strings in a list/page template, do you think it will be a possible solution to modifying the side navigation bar and I change the global navigation bar somewhere else? I can provide more detail if needed, thanks for any response.
