Can we use XA -connection pooling & db-link in a 3-tier DB architecture

In a 3-tier architecture, it is possible to access to DB without connection pool.The application used is XA.The type of network link used is a WAN link . 3 read-write and 1 read-only database's are used.

Please attach any supporting documents,if any.
