Can we restore the content of a backup set without the control file?

I went into a situation earlier today where somebody (It wasn't me that time!):
(1) had backed up a database and its archivelogs, in a compressed backup sets;
(2) pushed the files to another server and
(3) deleted everything on the source server, including ALL the control files and control files backups!
When he tried to recover the control file was missing and asked for some help... I've worked around the issue by using the controlfile snapshot he had forgotten (lucky me!)
Now I cannot remove from my mind the idea that next time I won't be so lucky... I wonder if there is another way to workaround this issue?
Does anybody have any idea how to restore the content of a backupset when we miss ALL the control files and their backups? I've tried to register the backup in the controlfile of another database but it doesn't work. I did not find anyway to recreate a controlfile with a specific dbid without the datafiles (and they that are in the backupset...).
Any other idea? Best Regards
Gregory
