can't see v$ views despite DBA and SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE

10.2.0.3 on AIX

I granted DBA and select_catalog_role as sysdba to my userid. When I log in using my userid, I can't select from any of the v$views like v$database. Anybody has any ideas whats wrong here.
