can't find -lclntsh

I am extremely new to Linux. Trying to install Oracle9i on RH9 for a school project. After the installation is complete, I am trying to run the make files as is directed in the installation tutorials. I can't figure out why I get the error :
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lclntsh
collet2: ld returned 1 exit status

Any suggestions?
