Can shrinking a datafile cause any performance issue?

User_CZT8PMay 22 2020 — edited Jun 2 2020

Hello,

1) Can I do any harm with shrinking permanent datafiles ?

2) Is there any possible loss of performance if I shrink datafiles?

3) If a datafile is like 5000MB in size and it gets calculated (via TOAD - 'minimum size') that it can be shrunk to 5MB, can it become a performance issue if i really set it that low, so to 5MB only? (maybe because of extends, blocks sizes, hwm ? )

4) Our "standard" is that we always create datafiles with initial size 1000MB (with auto extend on next 1000MB, with max size 31GB) - this was used when he had plenty of storage.

Now we are running low on storage and I am wondering if there can be any downside if I create a datafile with only let's say 5MB size ( again with auto extend on next 1000MB, with max size 31GB).

I am running on Oracle Database 12c Enterprise Edition Release 12.2.0.1.0

Thanks in advance.

Kr,

Danijel
