Can I have two versions of Java on one system ?

I have Java JRE 1.6.0_06 installed in my windows xp home ( SP2 )system. I want to run an application which requires SUN JRE :- 1.4.2_02 or 1.4.2_03 or 1.4.2_04. Can I download and use both java versions on the same system ? Will it cause any conflict in my system or in the application. Is there any option of using any one version as and when required.
