Build Number or Build Date, how to insert it automatically

Hello,
I'm looking for any way I could automatically insert a Build Number or a Build Date at compile time or build time. I would like this inserted value to be ultimately available as a variable in the code. I'm using Netbeans 6.0. If anyone knows of a solution using an Ant script or any other method, please post an example.
