Bug ID 6255782 (Bugzilla Bug 275783) - What's the root cause?

843798Aug 17 2005
As far as I can tell it's well established that the JRE can leave a ghost Firefox in memory when the browser is shutdown.

Furthermore, that this problem is fixed in 1.6.

What I want to know, given this doesn't happen everytime - is what the root cause of the problem is - and what if anything I can do to workaround it? (I'm not a Yahoo Games user - I'm a developer with several applets that routinely result in Firefox staying in memory - which does not happen in IE or Opera).

The Firefox boys seem to be happy with the fact that Sun are fixing the problem in 1.6, but in reality people don't instantaneously upgrade everytime a new VM comes out - and can't believe they're not trying to implement a browser level workaround for older VMs.

Any ideas?
