broadcast, multicast and bandwidth
843790Oct 8 2007 — edited Oct 8 2007multi-casting and broad-casting consume the same amount of
bandwidth, right?
switches know the (ip ----> MAC) mappings.
however, in the run-time, multi-cast groups are entered and exited.
so only java knows what datagrams to drop.
so, switches/routers must propogate all
datagrams to all targeted sub-nets and
then to ALL mac addresses.
logically there are plenty of reasons to use multicast groups.
bandwidth-wise, there are none.
