BIGFILE TS, RESIZE and data file init write wait event

plhtyukMar 20 2008 — edited May 9 2008
Hello everyone,

For the first time we decided to use BIGFILE tablespace with Oracle 11G.

But we are facing some "weird" performance problems. One of these is the following:

SQL> CREATE BIGFILE TABLESPACE H2 DATAFILE 'H:\H2.DBS' SIZE 15G REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 4G MAXSIZE 2048G LOGGING EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO ONLINE;

Tablespace created.

Elapsed: 00:03:29.10
SQL> alter tablespace h2 resize 19g;

Tablespace altered.

Elapsed: 00:03:13.79
SQL> alter tablespace h2 resize 23g;

Tablespace altered.

Elapsed: 00:13:38.27
SQL> alter tablespace h2 resize 27g;

Tablespace altered.

Elapsed: 00:19:44.50

It seems abnormal to me that it took 3 and a half minute to create a 15GB TS and that it took about the same time to resize it to 19GB (4 GB) more.

It also seems abnormal to me that the second time I resize this TS it took 13 minutes and a half (to grow it to 23 GB).

During this time the wait event we can see is : "data file init write".

Does this seems abnormal for any of you?

I don't want to thing about the time it would take to resize a file of 1TB and to expand it to 1.2TB. Not less than 2 days...

N.B. I am alone on the server.

Best regards.

Carl
