Best way to prevent users from inputing special characters

Hello all,
Anyone have some ideas about preventing users from putting unwanted characters such as colons, forward or backward slashes and semi-colons into free text form fields.

Example: A user needs to create a project name in a form field and uses
CER – Test 2: 24 April 2007

How to prevent them from using the colon?
