Best way to install 1.4.x over 1.1.x?

I currently have 1.1_Final installed in Windows XP. I have ready for install versions 1.4.0 and 1.4.1_01 (will probably go with 1.4.1_01). The installation notes recommend uninstalling 1.4.0 before installing 1.4.1, but nothing at all is mentioned regarding previous versions (pre-1.4.0). So, is it safe to keep 1.1.x installed and have two SDK's on the system, or should 1.1.x be removed before installing 1.4.x? (Sun sure has much room for improvement on all their documentation pages.)
