Best Practices Oracle 11G Database Appliance

We currently have a production database on 10g that we will be upgrading to 11g2 on the database appliance. On this database we have a staging area , a Data Warehouse and an Operational Data Store.(all in separate schema's). My question is what is Oracle's best practices in setting up our new database environment?
Should we separate the Staging area, Data Warehouse and the Operational Data Store in their own individual database? What are the pros and cons of doing this?
I am looking for some expertise on what to do?
