Best practice for closing connections?

Hi,

Does anybody have any reccommendations for when to close connections to a database? I've got as far as understanding that I shouldn't close it at the end of every page!

My project is a small web site that needs to be scalable but is not ever likely to have a vast number of concurrent users.

Any pearls of wisdom appreciated
