Best database version and configuration for Database Server

We have Oracle Forms and Reports application build on Oracle 10G. Its running on a 32bit hardware server with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, with 8GB of RAM. We often find a message on the server "Out of memory .. blah blah .. (Killed) Java"

We consulted a DBA, who suggests us to upgrade to 64bit server and it would reduce the problem by 50%. However I feel like it's a application related issue, it seems like the app is not releasing resources and thus causing out of memory problem.

Any thought or suggestions here?
