Barcode scanner - how to invoke the laser in APEX?

Environment:

APEX - 2.2
Symbol scanners (NC9060 and NC9090)

We have developed an application in APEX that runs on the above scanners and works fine with manual input.

We'd like to be able to use the actual scanning function of the scanner to read barcode information for several of the input fields but we can't seem to to be able to turn on the lasers to do the actual scanning/reading of the barcodes.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
