awt and swing with applet... use in real world??? plz hellp

hi all.

i am learning awt and swing these days, I have seen than many of the codes are explained with APPLET programming... as per my knowledge awt and swing are use to develop stand- alone windows based program and it is of no use to learn then with applets.. so plz help me... how should i learn awt and swing plz suggest me some good tutorials
