AWR versus gathering System Statistics with dbms_stats.gather_systems_stats

What is the difference between what AWR collects and the need to gather workload statistics with dbms_stats.gather_system_stats with a start and stop, or on an interval.

We have been reading about the need for workload system statistics are not sure if AWR is already doing this job for us. We are using Oracle 11.1.0.7 and have the tuning and diagnostics pack.
