Awful Slow IO performance on LSI RAID SAS3440X array, 4100 M2 SunFire

We've been working with SunFire systems for a little while now and we've been finding god-awful slow IO performance on our RAID arrays (Raid 1, Raid 10) on a number of different servers...4100 M2, 4150, 4450.
On our x4450 which used an Adaptec card, was getting 4-12MBps throughput during one of our SQL Stress Tests...which pretty much just reads and writes from a test database on the disk. We flashed it with the latest firmware from the Sun 2.1 Tools and Drivers and performance went through the roof at over 100MBps.
Our 4150s and the 4100 M2 both have the LSI 3000 series RAID controller. We're seeing an abysmal 1-2MBps performance during that stress test. As a comparison, we have some old crusty compaq G1 boxes with a RAID 1 array pulling around 50MBps... I know the LSI isn't the most robust controller out there, but that is just plain awful.
Anyone have any suggestions? The BIOS on our 4150s and 4100 are running the latest and greatest. Drivers are updated to latest version per the latest Sun Tools and Drivers CD for each system. Both are running the latest controller firmware per Sun's release.
Thanks in advance!
