Automount External USB drive in Enterprise Linux

I am having some difficulty in automounting the external drive upon boot.

The workarounds
running "mount -t auto ...." or
making fstab-sync refresh /etc/fstab by powering off and powering back the USB drive ON works...

However this is not very helpful.

If I disable fstab-sync and add an entry in /etc/fstab it does not detect the device at all.

Please help.
