Hi.
I`ve been using solaris 11.? (Gnome 2.30.2) for some time now without any issues.
My unix skills are limited but after some tinkering and migrations I have learned how to get a RAIDZ samba NAS and some virtualbox guests running stable without any user interaction, and thats all I need.
Headless, only connected through VNC. Easy.
Got my hands on new machine with fancy xeon CPU and a bunch of RAM for free, and amazingly all the HW seems supported by solaris working good.
I`m attempting to migrate to this new box, but 11.4 has been a complete nightmare so far compared to the old server..
The issues start after installing soalris-desktop on a fresh install.
After a 1-2 logins, the desktop (startx) crashes on launch because of access restictions to users own /home/ files. (Xauth .serverauth.xxx etc)
Sorted this issue chowning the folders and avoid startx`ing while root in a shell. (Still get no access errors, but it works ok without crashing)
Next was VNC.
In the old solaris I just checked a box in a menu and it worked.
With 11.4 i had to do it with commands, which I`m sure i did wrong. (Only black screen after login screen)
I sorted this with some X11 commands from a forum thread.. (Possibly DISPLAY related)
From there was an issue where starting ANY Vbox guest would crash the entire machine.
Sorted this by disabling the new Sxadm "feature" in 11.4.
My current problem now is that after I login (through VNC and locally) and start my Vbox VMs, solaris logs the user out and kills everything after a while. ("Everyhing" is a one terminal window and virtualbox )
Old Solaris locks the screen and required me to log back in when I reconnected through VNC, but never killed all my services..
I suspected that the computer was crashing and rebooting because of bugs with the VMs, but I tried the "uptime" command, but it says 3 days, so im guessing its something related to auto logout or some new "handy" Gnome3 "feature".
Also supected that X11 killed and started a new session on every VNC login, but then my VMs shouldnt go offline before I attempted to VNC back in.
Easy fix: Does anyone have a mirror for solaris 11.2 / 11.3 live image or text installer without all these new issues/gnome3, where I can just do what I`ve done before to get my very very basic needs working?
Hard fix: Does anyone have a suggestion on why solaris logs my user out and kills everything?
I cant even find anything related to power saving/screen saver or similar on google...
I can provide logs if anyone can give me a pointer to which and where and how to view them.. Google couldnt help me
Image below is Vbox logs (all are the same at the end), but I dont think it tells much other than that it was forcefully shut down by solaris.
I appreciate all and every piece of advice in this matter, as google unfortunately can`t help me on this
