ASMlib vs udev rules

stellrApr 14 2016 — edited Apr 19 2016

I'm attempting to install my first grid on a standalone system (well, I think I did it in 9i, but I don't remember clearly).  I started walking through 2052802.1 and find this step:

(e) Installing and Configuring ASMLib (You can skip this step, if you are not using ASM or Linux)

Note : You can either install ASM or You can use udev rules to configure ASM disks.

I wonder what are the implications of going one way or the other?  Is using udev rules described somewhere?  Again, this is my first outing if there is a better document to follow I'd love to get some pointers.
