asm md_backup

hi,
i am administering oracle 10g rac database with asm. Can anyone tell me brief about asm md_backup and md_restore command.
If my database is open and runing and my disk group is mounted ..then can i use md_backup command to backup meta data?
will it produce any performance effect in my production database. what is the use of md_restore command..can it autometically crate diskgroup and files if it is lost..!!!
