ASM: Contension

Dear Experts
I have few questions regarding to ASM......................

1. Is ASM instance sit between Databases Instances and the Disk(s) on the Server ?
2. Is it means that Database Instances hand over the dirty buffers to the ASM and then ASM write on the HDD ?
