ASM and RAID Configuration

SherrieKJan 10 2014 — edited Jan 23 2014

Oracle RDBMS 11.2.0.4

Grid Infrastructure (ASM) 12.1.0.3

We are migrating to new hardware with new SAN with tiered storage and I'm being offered the opportunity to choose RAID configurations.  I realize consideration should be given to workload, but as a start for basics we are going to test RAD 1+0 for redo, temp, undo, archive logs and RAID 5 for datafiles.  I'm not sure how to configure this in ASM; I was advised when we first implemented ASM to have only one diskgroup for DATA and another for FRA.  I typically have one member of redo in DATA, the other in FRA and do the same thing with a multiplexed control file.

We were on RAC but business requirements and budget dictates that we move back to standalone.  In our development / acceptance environment I host 1 ASM instance and up to 7 databases so there's a lot of sharing going on.

Our new VNX SAN storage has tiered storage pools and I'm just beginning to delve into that, but am wondering if anyone has any experience to share with ASM, RAID types, diskgroups, etc?  Any insights are appreciated.

(I realize this is a HA forum and not going to do RAC, but it's the only place I found a discussion with ASM items).  Forgive me if I'm in the wrong place.
