ASM and RAID 10 striping

scottjhnJun 17 2012 — edited Jun 26 2012
I learnt that by default, the ASM stripes the disk anyway, regardless the external RAID being striping or not, is this correct?

If so, when RAID 10 is used, we'll have "double" striping, once, by the external RAID (such as RAID 10), and another by ASM. Will this "double striping" add more than the needed redundancy to the database management system? Could it actually be slower than just use either the RAID 10 striping or the ASM's striping? not both.

If I prefer the external RAID 10 striping, can I turn off the ASM's striping?

Thanks

Scott
