ASM and FRA

divOct 25 2017 — edited Oct 27 2017

Oracle : 12.1.0.2

RHEL 6

ASM

SAN storage.

RAC 2node cluster.

Recently we had a disk failure on ASM in our test environment which has prompted me to ask this question.

Our current configuration for ASM

FRA - external redundancy

It is configured to optimize disk space with the SAN taking care of the redundancy.

However in our case since ASM disk got corrupted we were unable to bring back the disk even from the SAN level.

The oracle representative mentioned that if we had redundancy on the disks in ASM we could have recovered.

Now questions :

Should my FRA be NORMAL redundancy or higher, since if I lose my ASM disk,  I have no way to recover?

How have you setup your FRA on ASM ? Do you create 2 destinations one on ASM and other on udev or nfs. (Would that not be a performance problem).

I am trying to not lose my backups when an ASM disk fails.

Any thoughts /suggestions / soltutions appreciated.

Thank you for your time in advance.
