Ascending , Descending keywords in Index creation

version:11.2.0.3/RHEL 5.8

I have come across an INDEX creation DDLwhich has the keywords DESC, ASC  for indexed columns as shown below in red ?

What do DESC, ASC do in this Index?

CREATE INDEX PKT_MASTER_TGT_SENT_RD_IDX ON PKT_MASTER (TARGET_ID DESC,SENT_DATE DESC, READ ASC) ;
