ArcIMS Direct Connection in oracle spatial

Has anybody had any luck get ArcIMS too connect to an oracle spatial database using direct connect ( no arcsde service).
The doco that esri supply says it can be done , but does not say how.

I have got direct connect working with arc catalog, arc map etc.
