ARCHIVELOG consequences

I recently tried to make a backup of my Oracle XE database.
During this process I needed to turn archive logging on.
I was able to make the backup, and will be testing it shortly.

What I would like to know is what are the consequences or side effects of turning archive logging on.
Do I need to make any further changes?
Are there some things that I now need to do?
I'd like to know >>BEFORE<< things go horribly wrong.
