ARCHIVE LOG STOP has been deprecated - see ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG

Hey Gurus

I'm new to oracle 10g.I'm trying to turn off archiving without putting database down but when ever i give
" ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG STOP"

it says
ARCHIVE LOG STOP has been deprecated - see ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG

and my init.ora contain log_archive_start=false

can any body please explains
