Architecture for Generic Applet --> XML --> Oracle database

We have a critical web database application that was developed using Altio's generic Java Applet as the View part of the MVC architecture. Altio's generic Java Applet only talks to XML. Our developer wrote Java servlets between XML and Oracle database.

Our developer is considering using Web Services in this environment.

We like to hear recommendations for the better architecture design. Can JDeveloper play a very helpful role in this environment?
