arch files in /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/dbs/ ... why?

Hi,

Oracle version 11.2.0.1 on linux

I have archived redo turned on and the log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=/u01/app/oracle/oradata/aspasiad/arch/'

My redo files are created there fine and I manage them manually. The disc has just become full and I've noticed thousands of files in /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/dbs/ that all seem to be additional archived redo logs ...

why have they been created?
what are they used for?
how do I set oracle to not create them?
is it worth keeping them?

thanks
Robert
