applets appear as gray box in ie5.0

hi - i just installed jdk1.3.1_01 (upgraded from 1.3.0) in hopes that i'd be able to see applets in the internet explorer 5.0 browser. but the upgrade didn't help - the same thing happens:

applets appear in the browser window as a solid gray box. when you position the cursor over the gray box, the status line reads:

load: class MyClass not found

i am running windows 98. i have set the path in autoexec.bat to c:\jdk1.3.1_01\bin

your help would be much appreciated. this has been bothering me for awhile, and i finally decided to try to do something about it!
