Apex Security Question

If apex runs on the same server as the database, should I be worried about exposing the DB on the internet?

Is there a document outlining apex security best practices.

If i were to use app server, I would just use JDeveloper ADF. My data is a church membership program so it's reasonably sensitive (Names, addresses, contribution amounts)
